I asked each student a very simple equation as they arrived in class. The results were suprising. Some students who are good at algebra had to write the question down before being able to complete. Some students who find symbolic work hard were able to answer the question without difficulty.
So now I am working aurally far more and producing short written and aural question routines for each lesson.
Maybe a look at Gardiner's multiple intelligences model...
