Week 1: The Basics
[ objectives

Please note that to save
time and get a job done quickly, I'm using Netscape Composer to
write these pages. The HTML is hideous - just right click and select View
Page Source to see what I mean... but the pages work.

-
Recalled some facts about paths
and Web addresses (URLs)
-
Solved some problems based around
HTML code

Created a couple of Web pages
one containing a simple form using NotePad
-
Added Action and Method
attributes to the forms tag allowing your form to use FormMail.pl to process
form output
-
Added some 'hidden' input
boxes to your form to tell the FormMail.pl script what address to send
the information to and what page to display once the 'send' button has
been pressed.
-
Have used an FTP program to
upload
your pages to your BODMAS server space and test your forms
-

HTML links
Andrew Jackson recommends
the Joe Barta HTML tutorials at http://www.pagetutor.com/
- They seem quite neat and worth a look. The tutorials assume you are using
Notepad and that ties in with the HTML in 15 minutes worksheet and
Activity 1.
Maggie-Fitzpatrick-Jordan
(my boss 8-) has found a set of tutorials that assume nothing at http://www.htmlgoodies.com/tutors/
- again looks worth a try to me! This site has some stuff on the HTML 4.0
tags and cascading style sheets so us anoraks will find something. There
is also reference material on colours and some stuff on ASP.
I personally recommend http://www.jmarshall.com/easy/html/#forms
if you need a quick fix on more of the forms tags. The whole HTML Made
Easy page can be printed and kept for reference.
Paths
and URLs
The other mind bender I assailed
you with yesterday was the general concept of paths on Unix servers and
Web addresses. I'm still trying to find a web page that is accessible about
Unix paths - I'll end up writing one but with more pictures and exercises
than the handout I belaboured you with.
