Bank account arithmetic

Adult students know about overdrafts and credit balances. We all know that strange condition where having £0 is actually an achievement.

Use this to teach directed numbers to adult students...

Stories

-8 means overdraft of 8

-6 - 9 = -15 Story: "You are 6 pounds overdrawn and then spend another £9"

15 - 25 = -10 Story: "You have £15 balance but spend £25"

The next one is a bit trickier

10 -- 7 = 17 Story: "The bank cancelled a debit of £7, so you are £7 better off..."

Where did this come from?

Robert Powell is an educational guru (quite an occupation these days) whose Web site mainly lists things you can buy. He does give quite a nice summary-cum-checklist.

I think this strategy fits under his "Start from the familiar - use prior knowledge". After the basic manipulations are in place, I do number lines (for the visual thinkers) and even talk about inverse operations and why -1 x -1 might need to be +1.
