About this page

[ top ]

This page provides some online quizzes based on the UK Adult Numeracy Core Curriculum. The quizzes were produced using the excellent Hot Potatoes suite of programs. The table above lists the elements of the Numeracy Core - the table entries with links have tests available.

These quizzes are meant to help students test their understanding of the numeracy skills and provoke thought and interaction withteachers and other students when they get answers wrong. The questions are not a good guide to the Numeracy Core exam!

How to use the quizzes

[ top ]

The hot potatoes quizzes here fall into two main categories

  • Multiple choice quiz
  • Drag and drop matching puzzle
Both can be used by students in Open Access centres on their own - but I would suggest that students will need to be shown how to work through the tests at least once. The multiple choice tests provide feedback after each answer, and the student is returned to the question even if they get the answer right. They have to use the 'next' button to reach the next question.

I prefer to use the tests in a short session or as an alternative activity as part of a class. In that way, I can use the tests as a reason and prompt for talking about maths. This is especially true if the student is getting questions wrong - the feedback hints are designed to provoke the student to try something else or ask someone to explain. One thing I especially like about hot potatoes is that you can provide feedback for each of the wrong answers in the multiple choice tests!

Technical issues

Hot potatoes produces a mixture of HTML and Javascript code. I have chosen to use the 'Version 5 drag and drop' option in Hot Potatoes to produce the matching exercises and the 'Version 4 DHTML' option to produce the multiple choice tests.

All the quizzes here will work on Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 or above and Netscape 6 or later. None of the quizzes will work with Opera (alas). If you are using Netscape 4.7x, then the multiple choice quizzes will still work, but the matching exercises will not work.

The multiple choice quizzes do not allow the text to be enlarged to a great extent at present, but I am experimenting with the configuration files to allow a x2 enlargement over 'normal'. The drag and drop puzzles will allow enlargment to 'largest' size in MS Internet Explorer.
